Engaging and Effective End-of-the-Year Activity Ideas for Spanish Class

¡Hola profes!  How are you doing today?  I can’t believe how quickly spring is flying by!  How many days of school do you have left?

Profes, let’s talk about keeping students engaged and actively participating in class through the end of the year.  With summer on the brain, it can be challenging to keep your students’ attention.  I’ve been there, and I totally understand how draining teaching at the end of the year can be!  But over the years, I’ve found some activities that capture and keep students’ attention, while also allowing them to showcase their language skills and be creative!

#1 Spanish End of the Year Preterite Assignment

Did you study the preterite tense this year?  If so, this assignment is sure to be a hit!  To complete this activity, students take a journey down memory lane as they reflect on the events of the school year using the preterite tense!  Have students create a book detailing what they, their families, their friends, classmates, and teachers did throughout the year.  To finish their books, students include corresponding photographs or illustrations, adding a personal and creative touch to their projects.

#2 Spanish Summer Plans Assignment

Embrace the fact that your students are looking forward to summer break and have them complete a summer plans assignment!  Have students use the structure “ir + a + infinitive” (or the future tense, if you prefer)  to describe their upcoming summer activities.  This gives your students the opportunity to practice their language skills while also expressing their excitement for the summer ahead.  Adding photographs or illustrations further enhances the personalization of their projects!

#3 Spanish 1 Final Project

For Spanish 1 students, have your students complete a final project that offers a comprehensive review of vocabulary and structures learned throughout the year!  Students create a physical or digital poster about themselves, incorporating elements such as introductions, descriptions of physical and personality traits, family descriptions, and discussions about hobbies and daily activities.  This project not only reinforces language skills, but also encourages students to be creative and reflect on their own identities and interests.

#4 Review of Spanish 1 Jeopardy Game

Games are a surefire way to keep your students engaged and having fun, even through the end of the year!  If you’re looking for a fun way to review for final exams or simply to gauge what your Spanish 1 students learned this year, grab this editable Review of Spanish 1 Jeopardy game!  This interactive game engages students in friendly competition as they answer questions pertaining to regular present-tense verbs, “gustar,” “ser,” “estar,” and “tener,” and interrogative words.  This is a fun and effective way to reinforce the concepts you studied in Spanish 1 in a collaborative setting!

#5 Famous Spanish-Speakers Culture Project

The end of the year is a great time to incorporate culture into your lessons!  Have students select a famous person from a Spanish-speaking country, research their life and contributions, and create a physical or digital poster about the person.  This project reinforces students’ Spanish skills while also increasing their knowledge of famous individuals from the countries you’ve studied in class this year!

I hope this was helpful and that you got some ideas to help you end the school year on a high note!  We can do this!!  If you have any questions about these activities, feel free to leave me a comment below or send me an email.  Have a wonderful week, profes!
