Halloween Activity Ideas for Spanish Class

¡Hola profes!  I hope all is going well!  Has the first marking period ended for you yet?  At my school, we are just about done.  I can’t believe 25% of the school year is done already!

Let me ask you a question, profes: Do you and your students complete any Halloween-themed activities in your classroom?  As spooky season approaches, incorporating Halloween-themed activities into your Spanish classes can be a fun and engaging way to introduce fun new vocabulary!  Whether your students are novice learners or more advanced, Halloween offers plenty of opportunities to build their language skills in a festive atmosphere that they will really enjoy.

Here are some creative ways to teach Halloween-themed vocabulary in your Spanish classes:

#1: Start with a Halloween-Themed Vocabulary List (Freebie!)

If you’re looking for a simple yet effective way to introduce Halloween vocabulary, this free Halloween-themed vocabulary list is the perfect starting point.  It includes a wide range of terms, from spooky creatures like “el vampiro” and “la bruja” to Halloween essentials like “la calabaza” and “el disfraz.” You can use this list for vocabulary practice, comprehension activities, or even as a foundation for other Halloween-related tasks in your classroom.

#2: Decorate with a Halloween Vocabulary Word Wall

Transform your classroom into a Halloween-themed language-learning environment with a Halloween vocabulary word wall or bulletin board display!  Type up some Halloween-themed vocabulary terms and pair them with corresponding images.  Print them and display them in your classroom for both a festive look and a helpful resource for students!

No time to put all of that together?  I’ve got you covered!  Grab this ready-to-print word wall featuring 39 Halloween-related terms and corresponding images, available in 6 different formats to meet your classroom needs!  This visual display helps students connect words with pictures, making the learning process more intuitive.  You can encourage students to use the word wall for quick reference during speaking and writing activities throughout the season.

#3: Play Halloween Vocabulary Bingo

Students love games, and Bingo is always a hit!  Bingo boards are pretty easy to make – make a 5 x 5 table in your favorite word-processing software and add your terms!  Shuffle the words on subsequent boards until you have enough for your largest class.  Alternatively, you could print blank Bingo boards for students and have them write the vocabulary terms in whichever spaces they’d like, saving you time!

If you want to save even more time, I have the perfect resource for you!  Check out this no-prep, ready-to-print Halloween vocabulary bingo game set that offers a fun way to reinforce Halloween-themed vocabulary.  With 35 unique cards, you can choose from three formats—images only, text only, or images with text—depending on your students’ needs, preferences, or proficiency levels.  Whether you’re practicing vocabulary recognition or matching terms with their pictures, this game encourages student engagement in a lively and competitive way!

#4: Halloween Vocabulary Color by Code

Color by code activities combine vocabulary practice with a bit of artistic fun!  With color by code activities, students answer questions, and based on their answers, they will color sections of a hidden picture.  It’s an engaging way to reinforce vocabulary, and students enjoy seeing the image come to life as they correctly complete the activities.  This task is perfect for both individual work and a relaxing, end-of-class activity.

If you think your students would enjoy a Halloween-themed color by code activity, but you don’t have the time to make one yourself, I’ve got you covered!  Check out this ready-to-print Halloween-themed color by code activity that comes with 4 different activities that can be used with varying levels of Spanish!

#5: Halloween Story Escape Room

Add some spooky excitement to your Spanish class with a Halloween-themed story escape room!  In this interactive activity, students read a fun Halloween story in Spanish and solve a series of language-based puzzles to “escape.”  The puzzles focus on key Halloween vocabulary, comprehension skills, and critical thinking, making it a perfect blend of festive fun and meaningful learning.

No time to design one yourself?  I’ve got you covered!  Grab a ready-to-use Halloween Story Escape Room, available in both printable (PDF) and digital (Google Slides) formats.  Students will read the story and complete four puzzles to escape.  Puzzles include matching vocabulary with definitions, decoding hidden messages, and more!  It’s ideal for small groups or pairs and keeps students engaged while reinforcing key vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.

Bonus!  The escape room format encourages teamwork, communication, and problem-solving,  skills your students will love putting to the test!  Plus, it’s a low-prep activity for teachers that works great for a Halloween station, sub plan, or end-of-unit review.

#6: Create a Halloween-Themed Collaborative Poster

If you’re looking for a hands-on, creative way to review regular present-tense verb conjugations, your students will love this Halloween-themed collaborative poster!  Each student receives one square of the poster to complete by conjugating regular -AR, -ER, and -IR verbs in the present tense.  Once everyone finishes coloring and cutting, the class assembles all 25 pieces to reveal a vibrant Halloween image.

This activity turns verb practice into a fun, cooperative challenge while adding a festive touch to your classroom walls.  It’s available in an easy-to-use printable format and includes everything you need: student pages, teacher directions, and an answer key.  Students practice grammar, collaborate with classmates, and create something they’re proud to display!

#8 Halloween-Themed Interpersonal Questions

Want to get your students talking or writing about their own experiences?  Try some Halloween-themed personal questions!  This activity is perfect for fostering conversation or writing practice.  Simply write 10-15 questions such as, “¿Te vas a disfrazar esta Noche de Brujas?” or “¿Cual es tu dulce favorito?”  Once you have your questions, you can use them for partner interviews, class discussions, journal writing prompts, exit ticket questions, and more – the possibilities are endless!

#9: Create a Halloween-Themed Role Play

A fun and interactive idea is to have students create and act out short Halloween-themed skits.  Assign roles like “el fantasma,” “la momia,” or “el hombre lobo” and have students write a simple script in Spanish incorporating new vocabulary words.  This is a great way to encourage creativity and reinforce vocabulary in context!

#10: Halloween Creature Descriptions

Are you studying descriptions in any of your classes now, or would you like to review this concept with your students?  Halloween is the perfect time to take that opportunity!  Have your students write simple descriptions of Halloween creatures such as “el vampiro,” “el zombi,” or “la bruja.”  You could have your students write about what these creatures look like, what activities they like to do, where they live, and so much more!  If you like, add a fun twist by having your students read their descriptions aloud while other students try to guess which creature is being described!

#11: Host a Classroom Spooky Story Contest

Encourage students to write a short scary story in Spanish using Halloween-themed vocabulary.  If you like, you can provide a set of Halloween-themed words that students must include in their stories.  Students can illustrate their stories if time allows.  Post them around the classroom and do a gallery walk with your students.  Each student should vote on which story is the scariest!  You may wish to offer a small prize to the winner.

Incorporating Halloween-themed activities into your Spanish classroom not only brings some seasonal fun, but also enhances language learning through thematic vocabulary.  Whether it’s playing a Bingo game, decorating with a word wall, or writing scary stories, your students will enjoy the spooky twist on their regular Spanish lessons.  If you have any questions about these activities, feel free to leave me a comment below or send me an email.  Have a wonderful week, profes!
